Park District Dam Removals

The first dams were removed from Alameda Creek by the East Bay Regional Park District in 2001. The removal of these small swim dams from Sunol Wilderness began the restoration of Alameda Creek to a more natural system capable of supporting steelhead. Download the article from the Contra Costa Times about the removal ceremony here.

Indian Joe Creek

Indian Joe Creek is a tributary to upper Alameda Creek within the Sunol Regional Wilderness. Historical records indicate steelhead trout or salmon spawned in Indian Joe Creek in the early 1900s. Native rainbow trout were found in Indian Joe Creek just upstream of its confluence with Alameda Creek during sampling in 1997 and 1999.

W Tree Creek

W Tree Creek joins upper Alameda Creek downstream of Ohlone Regional Park. Native rainbow trout were found in the lower reach of W Tree Creek during sampling in 1999. Natural rock falls form a migration barrier 100 yards upstream of the confluence.
